Volleyball: Kenya Goes Undefeated to Win Women’s CAVB Qualifier, Returns to First Olympics Since 2004

Kenya went undefeated to win the African women’s Olympic volleyball qualifier. Overall, five teams competed in a round robin tournament where the winner qualified to the Olympics. The CAVB Women’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament was held in Yaounde, Cameroon from January 5th to January 9th 2020.

Kenya began its campaign by dropping its first set against Egypt, but recovered to win 3-1. After dispatching Botswana in straight sets the nation went up against the defending African Champions, Cameroon. Each time Kenya won a set Cameroon would comeback. This forced a fifth and deciding set where Kenya won 15-11. Kenya clinched the title and Olympic quota by defeating Nigeria 3-0. Cameroon finished second while Egypt finished third.

This will be Kenya’s third appearance in women’s indoor volleyball. The nation has also competed in 2000 and 2004. Kenya will be hoping to achieve its first victory at the Olympics as it went 0-5 at its two previous attempts.
