Canada went undefeated to win the NORCECA Men’s Olympic Qualifier. Overall, four teams competed in a round robin tournament where the winner qualified to the Olympics. The NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament was held in Vancouver, Canada from January 10th to January 12th 2020.
With the United States previously qualified, Canada became the large favourite to qualify from this tournament. The nation won its first match against Mexico in straight sets, but fell behind against their rival, Cuba 2-0 during the second match. Canada would pull off the reverse sweep to win the match 3-2. Needing any kind of victory to clinch the Olympic quota Canada did it in style as they won the final match 3-0 against Puerto Rico. Cuba finished second thanks to victories over Puerto Rico (3-0) and Mexico (3-1) while Puerto Rico finished third.
This is Canada’s fifth appearance and second consecutive appearance. The nation will be hoping to repeat its performance in Rio by reaching at least the quarterfinals. Additionally, this was the final opportunity for nations to qualify in this event as all 12 teams are now known.
