Triathlon: Belgium Wins Mixed Relay Qualifier as Event is Set to Make its Olympic Debut

A strong final leg gave Belgium the victory at the 2021 Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Event. The event consisted of teams not yet qualified to the Olympics where the top three qualified a team of two men and two women to the mixed relay event. Additionally, those athletes will be eligible to compete in the individual event. The event was held in Lisbon, Portugal on May 21st 2021.

The first leg saw Denmark’s Alberte Pedersen and Italy’s Angelica Olmo cross the line at 21:54. The nations were overtaken during the second leg by Andrea Salvisberg of Switzerland who held a one second lead for his nation as he passed off to Nicola Spirig. Spirig was able to extend Switzerland’s lead to nine seconds going into the final leg. However, a very strong performance by Belgium’s Marten Van Riel allowed him to catch and surpass Switzerland to win gold with a total time of 1:23:58. Italy was also able to surpass Switzerland as Nicola Azzano was able to outrun Max Studer to win silver. Both teams finished with a time of 1:24:48.

This was the final opportunity for nations to directly qualify a mixed relay team to the Olympics. Should a nation be able to qualify two men and two women in the individual rankings then they would be eligible to form a team to compete in the event.
