Table Tennis: Xu and Liu Win Mixed Doubles Title at German Open

Xu Xin won his second mixed doubles title in a row at the 2020 ITTF World Tour German Open with his partner Liu Shiwen. The event doubled as an Olympic qualifier where the two finalists qualified to the games provided that they haven’t qualified previously. The German Open is currently being held in Berlin, Germany from January 28th to February 2nd 2020.

Xu and Liu, the number one ranked pair in mixed doubles won their first two matches in straight sets before coming up against Germany’s Patrick Franziska and Petrissa Solja. The match went to a fifth set where Xu and Liu won 11-5. Joining them in the finals were Japan’s Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito. The pair won their three matches with by a set total 9-1, losing one set to China’s Lin Gaoyuan and Sun Yingsha during the round of 16. The finals were won by Xu and Liu who took a 2-0 lead before losing the third set 11-7, they however clinched the title by winning the fourth set 11-7.

As both finalists were not eligible to qualify to the Olympics, the Olympic quotas have been reallocated. Specifically, to the Olympic Rankings to be finalized in May. The World Tour continues to offer opportunities for Olympic qualification with the next scheduled event to be the Qatar Open set to be held in March.
