Table Tennis: Mizutani and Ito Wins First Qatar Open Mixed Doubles Title

Japan’s Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito won their nation’s first ever mixed double title at the 2020 Qatar Open. The event doubled as an Olympic qualifier where the two finalists qualified to the games provided that they haven’t qualified previously. The Qatar Open is currently being held in Doha, Qatar from March 3rd to March 8th 2020.

Top seed pair, Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito were the first mixed doubles pair to book their spot in the final where they won three consecutive matches in straight sets including against Hong Kong’s Ho Kwan Kit and Lee Ho Ching in the semi-finals. They faced China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha who decided to pair up for this tournament. The duo easily won their preliminary match before defeating the second seed Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong in straight sets in the round of 16. They too did not concede a set as they reached the final by defeating Spain’s Alvaro Robles and Maria Xiao in the semi-finals. The final saw both pairs trade sets before Mizutani and Ito won the next two including a 15-13 victory during the fourth set.

As both finalists were not eligible to qualify to the Olympics, the Olympic quotas have been reallocated. Specifically, to the Olympic Rankings to be finalized in May. The World Tour continues to offer opportunities for Olympic qualification with the next scheduled event to be the Japan Open set to be held in April.
