Egypt won table tennis gold in the men’s and women’s team at the 2019 African Games. By winning, the nation has qualified to the team event at the Olympics. Additionally, two athletes from the team will be eligible to compete in the singles event. Table tennis at the Africa Games is currently being held in Rabat, Morocco from August 21st to August 29th 2019.
The women’s team saw continental powerhouses Egypt and Nigeria win all of their matches in straight games, including against Algeria and Tunisia in the semi-finals respectively. The final was a tight match, but thanks to a strong performance from Dina Meshref Egypt defeated Nigeria 3-2.
The men’s team event similarly came down to Egypt and Nigeria as both nations won all of their matches 3-0, including against Tunisia and the Republic of Congo in the semi-finals respectively. As with the women’s the men’s team event was won by Egypt in a tight 3-2 affair.
Nations will have one more opportunity to qualify a team at the World Team Olympic Qualifiers to be held in January 2020. Nations can also qualify in singles or mixed doubles in events to be held in 2020. This concludes the table tennis events with Olympic quotas, but the African Games continues.
