Table Tennis: Campos and Fonseca Win Mixed Doubles Event to Qualify To Olympics

Cuba’s Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca closed out the Latin American Table Tennis Olympic Qualification Tournament by winning the mixed doubles event. As the winner of the single elimination bracket they qualified to compete at the games. The Latin American Table Tennis Olympic Qualification Tournament was held in Rosario, Argentina from April 13th to April 17th, 2021.

The event became wide open after the withdrawal of the top seed Puerto Rico (Brian Afanador and Adriana Diaz) and the upset of second seed Vitor Ishiy and Bruna Takahashi of Brazil who lost in straight sets to Campos and Fonseca. The Cuban pair made it to the finals where they met Chile’s Juan Lamadrid and Paulina Vega who defeated Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes and Camila Arguelles in a 4-3 thriller. The final saw Lamadrid and Vega take a 2-0 lead, but Campos and Fonseca would go to win four straight sets to win the match and Olympic quota 4-2.

Unqualified Latin American nations can still qualify via the world rankings. The next qualifier scheduled will be the European Olympic Qualification Tournament set to be held next week.
