Brazil successfully completed the double by winning both the men’s and women’s team event at the 2019 Latin American Team Qualifier. By winning the event the nation has qualified a team to compete at the games. Additionally, two players from the team event will be eligible to compete in the singles event. The Latin American Team Qualifier was held in Lima, Peru from October 25th to October 27th 2019.
Four teams competed in both the men’s and women’s qualifiers in a round robin format. In the women’s event both Brazil and Puerto Rico won their first two matches against Chile and Peru, though Puerto Rico had to play all five matches in order to edge out Chile. On the final day, Brazil swept Puerto Rico 3-0 to win gold and a spot to compete at the Olympics. Third place was won by Chile as they defeated Peru 3-0.
The men’s team event similarly saw Argentina and Brazil winning their first two matches against Chile and Peru with Argentina winning 3-1 and 3-0 respectively and Brazil winning both matches 3-0. The final match saw Argentina take 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but it was Brazil who won the final two matches to win gold via a 3-2 score line. Third place was won by Chile as they defeated Peru 3-0.
Unqualified nations will have one more opportunity to qualify a team at the World Team Qualification event to be held in January. The final continental team qualifier will be Oceania to be held in December.
