Boll and Yu won the gold medals in the table tennis single events at the 2019 European Games. In terms of Olympic qualification, the three medalists in the men’s and women’s singles will be given a spot to compete. Table tennis at the 2019 European Games is currently being held in Minsk, Belarus from June 22nd to June 29th 2019.
The women’s singles saw many upsets where only three of the top eight seeds reached the quarterfinals, including the top 3 seeded athletes; Romania’s Bernadette Szocs, Austria’s Sofia Polcanova and Sweden’s Matilda Ekholm losing to Luxembourg’s Xia Lian Ni, Germany’s Ying Han and Russia’s Polina Mikhailova in round 4. Ni and Han won their quarterfinal bouts against Sweden’s Linda Bergstrom (4-1) and Netherlands’ Jie Li (4-1) respectively while Mikhailova lost to Monaco’s Xiaoxin Yang 4-0. The final semi-finalist was Portugal’s Fu Yu whom defeated Germany’s Petrissa Solja in a close 4-3 match. The semi-finals saw Yu and Han defeat Ni 4-2 and Yang 4-3 respectively to book themselves a spot in the final and an Olympic quota. The gold medal went to Yu whom defeat Han 4-2. The bronze medal and final Olympic quota was won by Ni whom defeated Yang 4-2.
The men’s singles also saw many seeding upsets with only Germany’s Timo Boll and Belarus’ Vladimir Samsonov reaching the quarterfinals as top eight seeds. The two would face off in the quarterfinals with overall top seed Boll winning 4-1. The other quarterfinal matches saw Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar, Denmark’s Jonathan Groth and Ukraine’s Lei Kou defeat France’s Emmanuel Lebesson (4-1), Slovakia’s Yang Wang (4-3) and Belgium’s Cedric Nuytinck (4-2) respectively. Boll grabbed the first Olympic quota and spot in the final with a 4-1 victory over Pucar while the second quota was won by Groth whom defeated Kou 4-0. The gold medal went to Boll whom defeated Groth 4-2. The bronze medal and final Olympic quota was won by Pucar whom defeated Kou 4-1.
Should any of the medal winner’s nation qualify in the team event then the individual quota will be reallocated to the European qualification tournament to be held in 2020. This will be the next opportunity for European athletes to qualify in singles. The table tennis events at the European Games continues with medals for the team events to be awarded on Saturday.
