Peru picked up a pair of gold medals in men’s and women’s shortboard as the sport made its debut at the 2019 Pan American Games. In addition, the highest ranked eligible athlete qualifies to the Olympics. The competition format was a double elimination bracket. Surfing at the Pan American Games was held in Lima, Peru from July 29th 2019 to August 4th 2019.
The main rounds of the women’s shortboard was won by Peru’s Daniella Rosas whom had the best overall score outside of the first round including a 15.27 in the second round allowing her to advance to the final. The Repechage rounds saw two athletes eliminated in the first round of the main bracket advance all the way to the fourth round where Chile’s Jessica Anderson and Peru’s Melanie Giunta lost to Mexico’s Shelby Detmers and Argentina’s Ornella Pellizzari respectively. Pellizzari would go on to defeat Detmers to advance to the medal matches against Ecuador’s Dominic Barona. Barona advanced to the gold medal match with a massive score of 17.10 compared to Pellizzari’s 12.17, leaving the later with the bronze medal. The gold medal was won thanks to a final wave which gave Rosas a total score of 13.93, beating out Barona’s 12.50.
The men’s shortboard also had a Peruvian win the main bracket as Luca Mesinas defeated El Salvador’s Bryan Perez in the fourth round with an overall best score of 17.47 to advance to the gold medal match. The Repechage saw Argentina’s Santiago Muniz whom lost in the first round of the main bracket advance all the way to the fifth round where he lost to his compatriot Leandro Usuna whom advanced to the medal matches against Perez. Usuna defeated Perez 16.27 to 13.70 to advance to gold medal match, leaving Perez with the bronze medal. The final was very close with Mesinas winning gold with a score of 14.00 while Usuna won silver with a score of 13.77.
As a reminder both the 2019 World Surf League and the 2020 World Surfing Games have higher priority so should the athletes qualify in one of the above events then the next highest ranked eligible athlete will qualify instead. The only other way for other Pan American athletes to qualify is through the above-mentioned events.
Update: As Mesinas and Rosas qualified at the 2021 World Surfing Games, the quota won here has been reallocated to the silver medalists, Usuna and Barona respectively.
