Badminton Qualification

Qualification Summary

Each National Olympic Committee can enter a maximum of 16 competitors (8 men and 8 women) to compete with a maximum of two entries per event. As hosts, Japan was given one male and one female quota to compete in the singles events should they fail to qualify normally while 6 quotas (3 men and 3 women) will be decided by the Tripartite Commission. The remaining quotas will be decided by the BWF World Ranking List published on May 25 2021.

Nations may enter two athletes in singles provided they are both in the top 16 and two teams in doubles provided they are both in the top 8. If not, a nation can only enter a maximum of one athlete/team per event. At least one entry from each continent is guaranteed in singles and if the team is ranked in the top 50 in doubles. Should they not qualify normally the highest ranked entry from that continent will replace the last qualifying athlete/team. A nation can only benefit from the continental rule twice. Should an athlete qualify in more than one event the extra athlete quota will be reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible athlete of the same gender’s singles event. Additionally, all athletes must have played in at least three approved tournaments to be eligible to compete.
