Shooting: Wei Wins Women’s Skeet Lahti World Cup Title, Qualifies Nation to the Olympics

Wei followed up her silver medal performance at the 2019 World Championships with a gold medal in the women’s skeet at the 2019 Shotgun World Cup. In terms of Olympic qualification, the two highest ranked eligible athletes qualified their nation to the games. The Shotgun World Cup is currently being held in Lahti, Finland from August 13th to August 23rd 2019.

The qualification round was won by 2018 world champion Caitlin Connor of the United States whom hit 118/125 targets. This was one more than Wei Meng of China. Due to only two eligible athletes reaching the finals both Wei and Germany’s Nele Wissmer won quotas for their nations. The final saw Wei build a lead over her competitors and despite missing three out of her final six shots she was still able to out-shoot Connor by two targets to win the gold medal with 54/60 targets hit. The bronze medal was won by Amber English of the United States.

This was the final World Cup event for women’s skeet. Athletes can still qualify via their respective continental qualifiers or through the world rankings. The Shotgun World Cup continues tomorrow with quotas to be decided in men’s skeet.
