Two world records were set today on the second day of events at the first 2019 Rifle/Pistol World Cup event. The top two eligible athletes in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions, men’s 10m air pistol and women’s 25m pistol qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Rifle/ Pistol World Cup event is currently being held in New Delhi, India from February 20th to February 28th 2019.
The qualification round of the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions was topped by Norway’s Simon Claussen whom finished with a score of 1182, one point ahead of 2016 Olympic silver medalist (50m rifle prone) Kim Jong-hyun of South Korea. The final came down to the final shot between the defending Olympic silver medalist Sergey Kamenskiy of Russia and Hungary’s Istvan Peni where Peni outscored Kamenskiy 9.8-9.6 to win the gold medal by 0.1. As Kamenskiy previously won an Olympic quota the second quota was won by bronze medalist Marco de Nicolo of Italy.
The men’s 10m air pistol saw South Korea’s Lee Dae-myung top the qualification round with a score of 588, edging out defending Olympic bronze medalist Pang Wei of China. The final was dominated by 2018 World Junior champion Chaudhary Saurabh of India whom made his presence known at the senior level by setting a new world record with a score of 245.0, 5.7 points ahead of silver medalist Damir Mikec of Serbia. Both athletes won a quota for their nations to compete in 2020 and Serbia is now eligible to compete in the mixed team 10m air pistol event. The bronze medal was won by Pang.
A very strong rapid shooting performance was enough for Hungary’s Veronika Major to top the field during the qualification round of the women’s 25m pistol with a score of 591. She finished one point ahead of India’s Manu Bhaker. Major would continue her form in the finals, hitting 27 of the final 30 targets to win gold, an Olympic quota and a world record with a score of 40. The second quota was won by silver medalist Zhang Jingjing of China whom edged out Iran’s Haniyeh Rostamiyan in a shoot-off.
There are still many opportunities for athletes to qualify in future World Cup and continental events. As for this World Cup event, tomorrow two quotas will be awarded in men’s 10m air rifle.
