Momcilovic Velickovic and Chernousov won gold in their respective air pistol events at the 2020 European 10m Shooting Championships. In terms of Olympic qualification, the two highest ranked eligible athletes in the men’s and women’s 10m air pistol qualified their nation to the games. The European 10m Shooting Championships is currently being held in Wroclow, Poland from February 23rd to March 2nd 2020.
The qualification round of the women’s 10m air pistol was won by 2018 world champion Anna Korakaki of Greece whom finished with a total of 581, three more than Russia’s Vitalina Batsarashkina and Bulgaria’s Maria Grozdeva. Only one eligible athlete reached the final meaning Austria’s Sylvia Steiner and ninth place finisher Miroslava Mincheva of Bulgaria qualified a spot to compete at the Olympics. Entering the elimination stage of the final, it was Batsarashkina whom held the lead, but a bad round caused her to cede the lead to Korakaki. Subsequently, a bad round for Korakaki gave the lead to Serbia’s Bobana Momcilovic Velickovic whom went on to win gold with a score of 236.4. The silver and bronze medals were won by Switzerland’s Heidi Diethelm Gerber and Korakaki respectively.
The men’s 10m air pistol saw two athletes leveled on points after the qualification round with Russia’s Artem Chernousov and Turkey’s Ismail Keles finishing with 585 points. With one more inner-10 shot Chernousov won the tie-breaker. Chernousov continued his form into the final, but was surpassed by Italy’s Paolo Monna during the elimination stage. However, Monna’s final two shots were not as accurate to Chernousov’s whom ended up surpassing Monna for the gold medal. Keles won the bronze medal. The Olympic quotas were won obtained by Monna and fourth place finisher Juraj Tuzinsky of Slovakia.
The next opportunity for unqualified nations to obtain a quota in these events will be at the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament set to be held in May. The European 10m Shooting Championships continues tomorrow with medals and Olympic quotas being awarded in the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle.
