Liptak won his first European championships gold medal in the men’s trap at the 2019 European Shotgun Championships. In terms of Olympic qualification, the two highest ranked eligible athletes qualified their nation to the games. The European Shotgun Championships is currently being held in Lonato, Italy from September 3rd to September 17th 2019.
The qualification round saw Jiri Liptak of the Czech Republic and Slovakia’s Marian Kovacocy finish level with 122/125 targets hit. The Czechoslovakia shot-off was won by Liptak, allowing him to take the top position. Liptak continued his consistent performance to outlast his opponents where he hit 46/50 targets to win gold and the Olympic quota. The second quota was won by silver medalist Aaron Heading of Great Britain while Italy’s Mauro de Filippis won the bronze medal.
The next opportunity for European nations to qualify in this event will by at the 2020 European Championships to be held in May. The next event to award Olympic quotas will be the women’s skeet, set to conclude on Friday.
