Alexis Lagan was triumphant in the women’s 25m pistol at the 2018 Shooting Championship of the Americas. The highest ranked eligible athlete qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Shooting Championship of the Americas is currently being held in Guadalajara, Mexico from November 1st to November 11th 2018.
The qualification round was topped by Ecuador’s Diana Durango, the 2018 South American Games gold medalist whom finished just ahead of the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games silver medalist Laina Perez of Cuba. The final saw Perez take an early lead and hold it for most of the round. United States’ Alexis Lagan was able to briefly overtake Perez before ending in a tie, with one round of the elimination stage to go. Lagan won that round 3-1 to win the gold and a quota place for the United States. The bronze medal was won by Sandra Uptagtrafft of the United States
For Lagan, this makes up for her narrow Olympic qualification miss in the women’s 10m air pistol where she won silver. For other athletes, they will still have many opportunities to qualify in this event at several World Cup events and at the Pan American Games. Qualification for other shooting events continues Friday with one quota being handed out in the women’s 50m rifle, 3 positions.
