Italy and Russia picked up the final available Olympic quotas at the 2021 European Shooting Championships. The event also doubled as the final Olympic qualification event where the highest ranked eligible athlete in the men’s and women’s trap and the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol qualified to the games. The European Shooting Championships was held in Osijek, Croatia from May 20th to June 6th 2021.
Italy’s Jessica Rossi was the best performing athlete in the qualification round of the women’s trap where she hit 121/125 targets. This was two more than France’s Carole Cormenier. As the only eligible athlete to reach the final, Russia’s Ekaterina Subbotina won the Olympic quota. Going into the elimination stage of the final, Russia’s Daria Semianova held a three-hit lead and was able to maintain it on route to winning gold. Silver went to Rossi while Cormenier won bronze.
The qualification round of the men’s trap was won by Czech Republic’s Jiri Liptak whom hit all 125 targets to finish with a perfect score. The final saw Liptak fall behind Great Britain’s Matthew Coward-Holley by one shot going into the final set. Unfortunately, Liptak would miss three out of the final ten shots, allowing Coward-Holley to win gold. The Olympic quota was won by bronze medalist Mauro De Filippis of Italy.
As the European Championships holds a higher priority than the world rankings, the quota originally won by De Filippis has now been transferred to the next highest ranked eligible athlete, Germany’s Andreas Low.
The qualification round of the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol was won by France’s Jean Quiquampoix whom finished with a total score of 590, four more than Estonia’s Peeter Olesk. By the beginning of the elimination stage of the final Quiquampoix held the lead and while he briefly lost it to his compatriot Clement Bessaguet, he was able to regain the lead to win gold. Silver went to Russia’s Leonid Ekimov and bronze was awarded to Bessaguet. The Olympic quota was earned by Italy’s Tommaso Chelli
This was the final opportunity for nations to qualify in these events outside of quota reallocations. All that remains in shooting is for the reallocation process to take place and for nations to accept their quotas.
