Ceccarello nabs gold and an Olympic quota in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions at the 2021 European Shooting Championships. The event also doubled as the final Olympic qualification event where the highest ranked eligible athlete qualified their nation to the games. The European Shooting Championships are currently being held in Osijek, Croatia from May 20th to June 6th 2021.
The qualification round was won by Germany’s Jolyn Beer whom equalled the European qualification record of 1185. This was four points ahead of Russia’s Yulia Zykova. Beer wouldn’t be able to repeat that performance in the final, ultimately finishing sixth.
Zykova held a 3.3 lead over Italy’s Sofia Ceccarello after the kneeling and prone portions. However, a relatively weaker performance during the initial standing stage allowed Ceccarello to take a 0.3 lead going into the elimination stage. Zykova would fight back to take the lead with both athletes going to their final shot tied. Ceccarello would have the better shot to win gold and the Olympic quota. The bronze medal went to Norway’s Jeanette Duestad.
This was the final opportunity for nations to qualify in this event outside of the tripartite invitations and quota reallocations. The next event to have Olympic quotas to be decided will be the women’s 25m pistol set to conclude on Tuesday.
