Shooting: Deng Takes First World Cup Title in Women’s Trap After Close Final

China’s Deng Weiyun won her first gold medal at a World Cup event in the women’s trap at the third 2019 Shotgun World Cup. In terms of Olympic qualification, the two highest ranked eligible athletes qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Shotgun World Cup event is currently being held in Changwon, South Korea from May 7th to May 18th 2019.

The qualification round was topped by 2018 World Championship silver medalist Wang Xiaojing of China where she hit 121/125 targets, two more than Ashley Carroll of the United States. The Olympic quotas were decided at this round as only two eligible athletes reached the finals. Along with Carroll, France’s Melanie Couzy won the quota by defeating Finland’s Satu Makela-Nummela in a shoot-off. The final was a close affair with Deng finishing one hit ahead of Wang to win the gold medal. The bronze was won by Carroll.

For other nations, the next opportunity to qualify in women’s trap is split, for European and Pan American nations their next opportunity will be at their respective continental games while for other continents they will have to wait for the next World Cup event to be held in Lahti, Finland. The World Cup event continues tomorrow with the men’s trap.
