Apurvi Chandela of India set a new final world record in dramatic fashion to win the women’s 10m air rifle at the first 2019 Rifle/Pistol World Cup event. In terms of Olympic qualification, the top two eligible athletes qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Rifle/Pistol World Cup event is currently being held in New Delhi, India from February 20th to February 28th 2019.
The qualification round was topped by 2018 Asian Games gold medalist Zhao Ruozhu of China whom set a new qualification world record with a score of 634.0, 3.2 points higher than her compatriot Zhu Yingjie whom was the 2017 world junior champion. The final saw the lead initially exchange between China’s Xu Hong and her two compatriots, but a strong second half of the elimination stage saw Chandela score at least a 10.5 with each shot, allowing her to overtake the lead and win gold in world record fashion, with a score of 252.9. Since Chandela has already won an Olympic quota the two quotas were won by the silver and bronze medalists Zhao and Xu respectively.
Also, since China has now won a quota in the men’s and women’s event, they are now eligible to compete with a second team in the mixed 10m air rifle event. The World Cup event continues tomorrow with quotas being awarded in three events.
