Sarah Beard strikes gold in the women’s 50m rifle, 3 positions at the 2018 Shooting Championship of the Americas. The highest ranked eligible athlete qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Shooting Championship of the Americas is currently being held in Guadalajara, Mexico from November 1st to November 11th 2018.
The qualification round was topped by Sarah Beard of the United States whom set a new Pan American qualification record by finishing with a score of 1176, ten points higher than 2015 Pan American Games bronze medalist Yarimar Mercado of Puerto Rico. In the final, Beard would continue her fine form by taking the early lead and holding it for the entire competition to win the gold medal and the Olympic quota for her nation. The silver medal went Cuba’s Dianelys Perez while Mercado won the bronze medal.
For other athletes, they will still have many opportunities to qualify in this event at several World Cup events and at the Pan American Games. The final day of qualification events will be tomorrow with quotas being given out in four events.
