Shooting: Australia Sweeps the Medals on Day 1 of Events at Oceania Championships

Australia swept the available quotas on the first day of medals at the 2019 Oceania Shooting Championships. The highest ranked eligible athlete in the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle and the women’s 25m pistol qualified to the Olympics. In addition, all athletes whom qualify a quota for their nation must reach the Minimum Qualification Score during the competition. The Oceania Shooting Championships is currently being held in Sydney, Australia from November 1st to November 9th 2019.

The qualification round of the men’s 10m air rifle was topped by Australia’s Jack Rossiter whom set an Oceania Record of 628.7. This was 0.3 more than his compatriot Dane Sampson. The final however saw Alex Hoberg take the initial lead over his compatriots and held it to win gold and the Olympic quota with a score of 248.7. The silver and bronze medals were won by Rossiter and Sampson respectively.

Similarly, to the men’s event Australia dominated the women’s 10m air rifle with all three of their shooters topping the qualification round with Jessica Rossiter winning the round with a score of 624.6. Rossiter continued her fine performance by winning the Olympic quota for her nation with an Oceania finals record of 246.8. The silver medal was won by Elise Collier while Emma Adams gave Australia the medal sweep by winning the bronze medal. By winning a quota, Australia is now eligible to compete in the mixed team 10m air rifle event.

The qualification round of the women’s 25m pistol was topped by Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch whom finished the round with a score of 575, ten more than her compatriot Alison Heinrich. Galiabovitch continued her dominance in the event by easily winning the final and Olympic quota with a score of 26. The silver medal was won by Heinrich while Australia’s Civon Smith won the bronze medal.

All selected athletes must achieve the MQS in an eligible event order to compete at the Olympics. The Oceania Shooting Championships continues tomorrow with quotas being awarded in the men’s and women’s skeet and the men’s 10m air pistol.
