Sailing: South American Olympic Continental Qualifiers End With 470 Championships

The 2020 470 South American Championships concluded today with medals awarded to Argentina and Brazil. In addition, the highest ranked eligible nation in the men’s and women’s events qualified to compete at the Olympics. The 470 South American Championships was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina from February 11th to February 16th 2020.

The men’s 470 was won by Brazil’s Geison Dzioubanov and Gustavo Thiesen. The pair won six out of the ten races, including the first four. They finished with a total of 14 points and an Olympic quota. The silver medal went to their compatriots Henrique Haddad and Bruno Amorim while Argentina’s Fernando Gwozsz and Tomas Dietrich won the bronze.

As the only boat to compete in the women’s 470, Argentina’s Maria Belen Tavella and Lourdes Hartkopf won the event and Olympic quota.

This was the final opportunity for South American nations to qualify in this event. Qualifiers for the 470 class are set to conclude with the European qualifiers at the Genoa World Cup event in April.
