Sailing: Four Nations Qualify Quotas After the Conclusion of Men’s 49er and Mixed Nacra 17 Foiling

Four more nations obtained Olympic quotas on day one of sailing finals at the 2019 Pan American Games. The Pan American Games also doubled as the continental qualifier for the men’s 49er and the mixed Nacra 17 Foiling. One quota for each continent goes to the highest ranked eligible nation. For the purpose of sailing Central and South America comprise of one continent while North America and the Caribbean comprise of a second. Sailing at the Pan American Games is currently being held in Lima, Peru from August 3rd to August 10th 2019.

The men’s 49er was dominated by Brazil’s Marco Grael and Gabriel Borges whom won six of the twelve main races and outside of the discarded 7th place finished in the top three. Going into the medal race the pair had an insurmountable lead as they went on to win gold and the Olympic quota with a total score of 23 net points. The silver medal was won by Argentina’s Yago Lange and Klaus Lange (35 points). The North America and Caribbean quota came down to the match race as only a single point separated the United States’ Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid and Canada’s Alexander Heinzemann and Justin Barnes. The Canadian pair won that race to win the quota and bronze medal (39 points).

The mixed Nacra 17 Foiling saw Riley Gibbs and Anna Weis of the United States take a strong lead of six points going into the medal race where they won the gold medal and Olympic quota with a total net score of 23 net points. The silver and bronze medals were won by Argentina’s Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco (27 points) and Brazil’s Samuel Albrecht and Gabriela Nicolino (31 points) respectively. The Central and South American quota was won by Uruguay’s Pablo Defazio and Dominque Knuppel whom finished in fourth place.

As a reminder the 2019 World Championships will have priority over the continental qualifiers so if any of the above nations qualify there then the next highest ranked eligible nation here will qualify. That will be the final opportunity for Pan American nations to qualify in sailing to the Olympics. Sailing at the Pan American Games concludes tomorrow with quotas being awarded in the women’s 49erFX after the event was postponed today due to poor weather.

Update: As the United States qualified to the Olympic via the 2019 World Championships, the Olympic quota won here has been reallocated to the next highest ranked eligible nation, Puerto Rico.
