The English men’s team made it two for two by winning gold at the 2019 European Men’s Rugby Sevens Olympic Qualifying Tournament. By winning the tournament Great Britain also qualified to the Olympics. From an agreement between the British nations England was selected to try and qualify Great Britain to the Olympics. The European Men’s Rugby Sevens Olympic Qualifying Tournament was held in Colomiers, France from July 13th to July 14th 2019.
Overall 12 nations competed in three pools with the top two and two best third ranked teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Pool A was won by France who went undefeated including a narrow 10-5 victory over Portugal in the final rotation. Portugal however, lost earlier to Italy, 19-12, but managed to finish in third and advance to the quarterfinals thanks to a 47-0 trashing of Hungary.
Pool B ended with two teams tied with 8 points as Ireland and Spain drew their final match 17-17. Thanks to a higher point differential Spain won the group by three points. Russia faced 47-0 and 52-14 blowouts against Spain and Ireland respectively and despite defeating Ukraine 40-7 they were the third place team with the worst goal differential and thus did not advance.
England went undefeated in Pool C by scoring 40-0, 24-7 and 33-7 victories against Lithuania, Georgia and Germany respectively. Germany finished second thanks to 33-7 and 24-19 victories over Georgia and Lithuania respectively. Georgia advanced as one of the best placed third place teams via a 38-0 victory over Lithuania.
The quarterfinals saw France, Ireland, Portugal and England score victories over Georgia (28-0), Germany (21-0), Spain (14-5) and Italy (35-0) respectively. The semi-finals saw the top two ranked European teams, France and England defeat Ireland (19-12) and Portugal (29-12) respectively to set up an enticing final. England, however proved to be too powerful and won the final match 31-7. The bronze medal was won by Ireland who defeated Portugal 26-12.
By finishing second and third respectively France and Ireland have advanced to the final Olympic qualification tournament where they will play nations from other continents for a final spot to the Olympics. The next continental qualification tournament will be held in Oceania.
