The United States Virgin Islands made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1968 and has competed ever since, with the exception of 1980 where it participated in the United States led boycott. The United States territory typically sends a small delegation with fewer than 10 athletes competing at each Olympics. The athletes generally compete in athletics, boxing, sailing, shooting and swimming. The Virgin Islands has won a single medal in its history when sailor Peter Holmberg won silver in the men’s Finn at the 1988 Olympics.
