Guyana

History

Guyana made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1948 where it competed as British Guiana until 1964 where after it gained its independence. The nation has participated in all subsequent Olympics with the exception of 1976 where it was one of two non-African nations that joined the African boycott. Guyana sends a very small delegation of around five athletes to compete at each Olympics. So far the sports Guyana has competed in are athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming and weightlifting. Their first and only medal was won in 1980 where boxer Michael Anthony won bronze in the men’s bantamweight.
