Fiji

History

Fiji made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1956 and has competed in most Olympics since. The exceptions being 1964 and 1980 where it participated in the United States led boycott. The nation has historically sent a small team of around 10 athletes to the Olympics, but in 2016 the team contained over 50 athletes due to qualification in team sports, including rugby sevens which was recently added to the program. Other sports that Fiji typically competes in include athletics, judo, swimming and weightlifting. Fiji won its first medal at the 2016 Olympics where the men’s rugby sevens team won gold.
