History
Azerbaijan made its first Summer Olympic Games appearance in 1996, after gaining independence from the Soviet Union and has competed ever since. The nation typically sends a mid-sized team of athletes in a variety of sports though more commonly in combat sports, particularly in wrestling.
Azerbaijan has won medals at every Summer Olympics it has participated in. In total the nation has won 43 medals in 7 sports with 22 of them being won in wrestling. Boxing has also provided 8 medalists. The most successful athletes were wrestlers Khetag Gazyumov and Mariya Stadnik whom both won medals from 2008-2016. Gazyumov won one silver and two bronzes while Stadnik won two silvers and one bronze. In 2016 Azerbaijan had their best performance, winning 18 medals.
