Vietnam made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1952 as the state of Vietnam. Between the 1956 and 1972 Olympics only the Republic of Vietnam competed and after reunification the entire nation competed in 1980 and all subsequent Olympics. The nation sends a small delegation with around 20 athletes competing over the last two games. The athletes compete in a variety of sports including, athletics, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.
Vietnam won its first medal in 2000 and has won a total of four medals across three sports; two in shooting and one each in taekwondo and weightlifting. Vietnam’s only multi-medal winner is sport shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh whom won gold in the men’s 10m air pistol and silver in the 50m pistol at the 2016 Olympics.
