History
Qatar made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1984 and has competed ever since. The nation typically sends a small delegation of fewer than 20 athletes; however in 2016 it sent over three dozen. The athletes compete in a variety of sports with athletics, shooting and swimming being the most common.
Qatar won its first medal in 1992 and has won a total of five medals across three sports; three in athletics and one each in shooting and weightlifting. The most successful athlete is high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim whom won bronze in 2012 and silver in 2016 in the men’s high jump. In 2016 Qatar won a single medal.
