Zimbabwe made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1928 as Rhodesia. Rhodesia would return and compete in 1960 and 1964 and return again to compete as Zimbabwe in 1980 and has competed ever since. The nation typically sends a small delegation of around 15 athletes whom compete in various sports including, athletics, boxing, diving, shooting, swimming and tennis.
Zimbabwe won its first medal in 1980 when the women’s field hockey team won gold. The nation’s other seven medals were all won by swimmer Kristy Coventry. She was able to win two gold medals in women’s 200m backstroke (2004 & 2008), four silver medals in 100m backstroke (2004 & 2008), 200m individual medley (2008) and 400m individual medley (2008) and one bronze medal in 200m individual medley (2004).
