Ghana made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1952. The nation missed the next games, but returned in 1960 and has competed in almost all subsequent Olympics with the exceptions of 1976 where it participated in the African boycott and 1980 where it participated in the United States led boycott. Ghana generally sends a small delegation of around 15 athletes though that number greatly increases when the nation qualifies in football. Other sports Ghana typically qualifies in are athletics and boxing. Ghana won its first medal in 1960 and has won a total of four with three being in boxing and the other being the bronze won by the men’s football team in 1992.
