History

Burundi made its first Summer Olympic appearance in 1996 and has competed ever since. Typically the nation sends a small delegation of fewer than 10 athletes to each Olympics. So far the nation has competed in athletics, judo and swimming. Burundi won its first medal in 1996 where long distance runner Venuste Niyongabo won gold in men’s 5000m. The nation won its second medal in 2016 where middle distance runner Francine Niyonsaba won silver in women’s 800m.
