Judo: Provisional Qualifiers Announced After Finalization of Olympic Rankings

With the conclusion of the final events which award ranking points, the International Judo Federation has revealed the initial list of Olympic qualifiers based on the Olympic Qualification List. Athletes could obtain points at eligible events from May 25th 2018 until June 30th 2021. Only one athlete per event may qualify to the games. In total 352 quotas were available where athletes can qualify through two methods.

The first method is through the direct qualification process. For each event, the top 18 eligible athletes qualify. Qualification is by name, unless a nation has more than one athlete ranked above the 18th ranked nation in which case, they may choose which athlete will be represented.

The second method is through the continental qualification process. 100 quotas are available through this method. The quotas are split as follows; Africa 24 quotas (12 men and 12 women), Europe 25 quotas (13 men and 12 women), Asia 20 quotas (10 men and 10 women), Oceania 10 quotas (5 men and 5 women) and Pan America 21 quotas (10 men and 11 women). Athletes are combined in an overall men’s and an overall women’s ranking where the highest ranked unqualified eligible athlete will be given a spot to compete. A nation can only qualify one quota overall through this method.

As Oceania did not have five eligible women, two quotas were reallocated to the highest ranked eligible unqualified woman, specifically, South Korea’s Han Hee-ju (women’s -63kg) and Italy’s Alice Bellandi (women’s -70kg).

Overall, Russia (along with host Japan) qualified a full team of 14 athletes while Brazil, France, Germany and South Korea qualified 13 athletes. In total, 109 nations have qualified through the rankings. Additionally, by qualifying six athletes in the proper weight classes, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mongolia, Netherlands, Russia, South Korea and Uzbekistan will be eligible to compete in the mixed team event.

These quotas are currently provisional. For example, North Korea is listed as winning a quota in women’s -48kg, but they will surely decline as they will not take part at the Olympics, additionally some athletes may withdraw due to injuries or their nation may decline the quota.

Update: Several changes have occurred since the original release. Please refer to the sport qualification page for the most up to date list.
