Handball: Brazil Wins Sixth Women’s Pan American Games Title

Brazil won their sixth Pan American Games title by defeating Argentina. By winning the tournament the nation has also qualified to the Olympics. In total eight teams competed in two group stages with the top two advancing to the semi-final. Handball at the 2019 Pan American Games is currently being held in Lima, Peru from July 24th to August 5th 2019.

Group A was won by defending Pan American Games champion Brazil whom went undefeated. Also advancing to the semi-finals was Cuba whom went on a late run to separate itself from Puerto Rico, winning the match 27-24. Puerto Rico finished third thanks to a 23-9 victory over Canada.

Similarly, Argentina also went undefeated to win Group B. The United States finished second thanks to a 26-22 victory over the Dominican Republic whom finished third by defeating host nation Peru 46-16.

The semi-finals saw relatively easy victories by Argentina and Brazil against Cuba (31-21) and the United States (34-9) respectively to set up a final match between the two top rivals of this continent. The final was quite close for the first half with both teams drawing each other 12-12. The second half however, was when Brazil made its move as they went on to win the gold medal 30-21. The bronze medal was won by Cuba who defeat the United States 24-23.

By finishing second Argentina will get a second chance to qualify to the Olympics at the final Olympic qualification tournament. Third place Cuba may also get an additional opportunity, depending on the results of the Women’s World Championships. Handball at the Pan American Games continues with the men’s tournament beginning tomorrow.
