Argentina won their second ever title in men’s handball at the 2019 Pan American Games. By winning the tournament the nation has also qualified to the Olympics. In total eight teams competed in two group stages with the top two advancing to the semi-final. Handball at the 2019 Pan American Games was held in Lima, Peru from July 24th to August 5th 2019.
Group A was won by Argentina whom went undefeated, but had to work for it as they were down 15-12 against Chile during their second game and were barely leading Cuba 11-10 during their final game at half-time. Argentina would win those matches 31-29 and 23-21 respectively. Chile also advanced to the semi-finals thanks to 38-28 and 34-26 victories against Cuba and the United States respectively. The United States finished third thanks to a last-minute goal by Ty Reed where they defeated Cuba 26-25.
Defending champions Brazil on the other hand had an easier time winning their group as they won by nine or more goals in each of their matches. Joining them to the semi-finals was Mexico who recovered from their 33-23 loss to Brazil to defeat Puerto Rico and Peru 24-19 and 34-17 respectively. Puerto Rico finished third after defeating Peru 27-23.
The biggest upset of the tournament happened in the semi-finals where defending champion Brazil lost to Chile 32-29 thanks to a strong first half and Emil Feuchtmann’s eleven goal effort. Argentina won the second semi-final with a 34-14 victory over Mexico. The final was a tight affair with Argentina only holding a 15-14 lead at half-time. However, a strong beginning to the second half allowed Argentina to extend their lead and win the title 31-27. Brazil won the bronze medal by defeating Mexico 32-20.
By finishing second Chile will get a second chance to qualify to the Olympics at the final Olympic qualification tournament. Brazil may also get an additional opportunity, depending on the results of other continental qualifiers.
