Gymnastics: Russia Makes History, Wins First Men’s Team Title at World Championships

Russia won their first ever men’s team title at the 2019 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. In terms of Olympic qualification, the nine highest ranked nations not yet qualified will be given a spot to compete at the games. The Artistic Gymnastics World Championships is currently being held in Stuttgart, Germany from October 4th to October 13th 2019.

The qualification round was topped by Russia who finished with a score of 259.928. This was thanks to their top performances in the rings and vault and their shared top performance in the horizontal bar with defending champions China who along with top performances in the floor and parallel bars finished second with a score of 258.354. Japan finished closely in third with 258.026 points. The nine nations earning their spot to the Olympics were Ukraine, Great Britain, Switzerland, the United States, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Brazil, Spain and Germany.

Russia would again prove their strength as they would top the floor, rings, vault and horizontal bar on route to winning their first ever men’s team gold medal with a total score of 261.726. China was the best nation on the pommel horse and parallel bars which allowed them to win silver with a score of 260.729. Japan won the bronze medal with a score of 258.159.

In addition, all athletes competing in the team event will be eligible to compete in the individual events. This was the final opportunity for nations to qualify in the men’s team event. They still can however, qualify to the individual events. The World Championships continues tomorrow with medals being awarded in the women’s artistic individual all-around.
