Three nations were able to qualify athletes at the end of the first day of the Asian/Oceania Zonal Qualifiers. Only unqualified nations were allowed to compete where the winner of each event was given a quota to compete at the games. Each event consisted of a pool round where athletes were then seeded into a single elimination bracket. The Asian/Oceania Zonal Qualifiers are currently being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from April 25th to April 26th 2021.
The men’s individual sabre saw the top two seeds lose in the semi-finals as Hong Kong’s Low Ho Tin won over top seed Voragun Srinualnad of Thailand 15-10 and Uzbekistan’s Sherzod Mamutov defeated Kazakhstan’s Nazarbay Sattarkhan 15-8. The final and quota was won 15-7 by Mamutov over Low.
On the other hand, the women’s individual foil came down to the top two seeds where Uzbekistan’s Yana Alborova faced off against Singapore’s Amita Berthier. To get here Alborova defeated the Philippines Samantha Catantan 15-10 while Berthier won over Lebanon’s Mona Shaito 15-4 in the semi-finals. The finals went to the final point where Berthier won the event and quota in a dramatic 15-14 fashion.
The final event of the day was the men’s individual epee. The semi-finals saw top seed Nguyen Tien Nhat of Vietnam defeat Saudi Arabia’s Jawad Aldawood 15-8 while Kyrgyzstan’s Roman Petrov won over Uzbekistan’s Fayzulla Alimov 15-13. The final bout for the Olympic quota was won by Petrov whom obtained a 15-12 victory over Nguyen.
This was the final opportunity for Asian/Oceania nations to qualify in the above events. The remaining individual events will be held tomorrow as the zonal qualifiers conclude.
