Japan was the top nation at the 2019 Eventing Group F & G Olympic Qualification Event. In terms of Olympic qualification, the two highest eligible teams qualified their nation to the team event. Group F & G consist of nations from Africa, Asia (minus Central Asia) and Oceania. The Eventing Group F & G Olympic Qualification Events was held in Saumur, France from May 22nd to May 26th 2019.
Three eligible nations; China, Hong Kong and Thailand participated in this event along with Japan. The dressage portion was topped by Japan whom had three consistent performances to finish with a score of 88.3. China led by 2018 Asian Games bronze medalist Hua Tian had the best individual performance among Group F and G nations with a score of 25.2 had a team total of 89.2. Thailand and Hong Kong were a bit further back with scores of 108.2 and 114.8 respectively.
The cross-country portion saw China leapfrog Japan for first overall to finish the stage with overall scores of 118.6 and 121.3 respectively. Both nations however, had one team member drop out, leaving no more room for error for either nation. Thailand had the best performance among the four nations in terms of least points gained, but remained third overall with a team score of 135.3. Hong Kong’s Patrick Lam had a refusal which placed the three-person team far behind with a score of 173.6.
Before the jumping portion began two Hong Kong riders withdrew during the second horse inspection, effectively eliminating them from the competition. Japan was the top nation during the jumping portion where they incurred eight penalties, finishing first with a total team score of 129.3. China and Thailand came in second and third with scores of 135.4 and 175.3 respectively. Both nations are currently qualified to the Olympics.
Athletes which are selected to the team event will also be eligible to compete in the individual event. Additionally, all athletes must achieve the minimum eligibility requirements in order to be allowed to compete. Other nations from these groups will have one more opportunity to qualify a team at the Eventing Nations Cup. Individual athletes will also be able to qualify through the Olympic rankings.
