Equestrian: After Weather Delay Great Britain Wins Gold in Eventing at Equestrian Games

A very consistent Great Britain was able to win gold in team eventing at the 2018 World Equestrian Games. The top six nations, minus Japan whom have qualified as hosts qualified three athletes to form a team for the Olympics. The athletes will also be eligible to compete in the individual event. The World Equestrian Games are being held in Tyron, United States from September 11th to September 23rd 2018.

Team eventing consists of a team of up to four athletes where they compete in dressage, cross-country and show jumping. The three athletes with the best scores are added together and the nation with the lowest score wins.

The dressage portion was topped by Germany where Julia Krajewski (Horse: Chipmunk FRH) and Ingrid Klimke (Horse: SAP Hale Bob OLD) finished in the top two among individual athletes. In fact, Krajewski’s 19.9 is ranked as one of the best performances of dressage in eventing. In total, Germany’s score was 73.4 with Great Britain and the United States following behind with scores of 80.8 and 83.0 respectively.

Great Britain had the best performance in the cross-country portion where all four of their riders finished with a perfect run, moving the nation to first overall with a score of 80.8. Ireland’s near-perfect run moved them from seventh to second overall with a score of 89.0 while conversely, Germany had a relatively poor run and fell to sixth place. Japan was the largest movers where they went from tenth to fourth. Rounding out the top three was France whom had a score of 91.8.

Due to poor weather the show jumping portion was delayed a day. Overall it was Germany and Ireland whom added the least penalties to their score with both only receiving four penalty points. For Germany this moved them up to fifth place. For Ireland it was not enough to win the entire event as Great Britain only incurred 8 penalties, leaving them with a score of 88.8 while Ireland finished second with 93.0. France won the bronze medal after finishing with a score of 99.8. Japan finished fourth with a score of 113.9.

Along with the three medalists; Germany, Australia and New Zealand also qualified a team of three athletes to the Olympics. The next opportunity for unqualified nations to gain entry to the Olympics will be at each Equestrian’s group qualification event. The final event offering quotas at the Equestrian Games will be show jumping.
