Diving: Li and Hains Win Gold at the 2019 Oceania Championships Secures Quotas for Australia

The 2019 Oceania Diving Championships began with medals being awarded in the men’s 3m springboard and women’s 10m platform. In addition, the highest ranked eligible athlete in each event qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Oceania Diving Championships is currently being held in Auckland, New Zealand from December 14th to December 15th 2019.

The men’s 3m springboard was won by Australia’s Shixin Li whom obtained a score of 456.90 points. Li previously competed for China and was the 2011 and 2013 World champion in the 1m springboard. Additionally, Li also won the quota for his nation. The silver and bronze medals were won by Australia’s Kevin Chavez (412.40 points) and New Zealand’s Liam Stone (383.60 points) respectively.

Australia made it two golds and two Olympic quotas for the day by also winning the women’s 10m platform. Nikita Hains was able to obtain a score of 270.70 points, easily eclipsing the New Zealand challenge of Mikali Dawson (149.00 points) and Alyssa Bond (133.30 points) whom won the silver and bronze medals respectively.

The Oceania Diving Championships continues tomorrow with medals and Olympic quotas to be awarded in the women’s 3m springboard and men’s 10m platform.
