Diving: European Championships Draws to an End with Men’s 10m Platform

Host nation Ukraine capped off a successful event with a gold medal in the men’s 10m platform at the 2019 European Championships. In terms of Olympic qualification, only the winner is eligible to qualify their nation to the games. Should they have already previously qualified a quota or the nation has already achieved the maximum quota then the quota will not be used. Diving at the European Championships was held in Kiev, Ukraine from August 5th to August 11th 2019.

The preliminary round was led by Great Britain’s Noah Williams whom took the lead after the second dive, but a poor fifth dive caused him to ultimately finish fourth in the event. Williams was overtaken by Ukraine’s Oleksii Sereda whom won the round with a total score of 447.70 points. This was 17.40 ahead of Russia’s Nikita Shleikher.

The final saw France’s Benjamin Auffret take the initial lead after the second dive, but a strong performance by Sereda allowed him to take the lead after the fifth dive to win the gold medal with a score of 488.85. The silver and bronze medals were won by Auffret and Russia’s Ruslan Ternovoi whom finished with scores of 474.90 and 445.25 respectively. As Sereda had already qualified at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships the Olympic quota has been reallocated to the 2020 World Cup.

The next opportunity for European nations to qualify in this event will by at the Diving World Cup to be held in 2020. The next continental qualification event will be Asia expected to be held in September.
