Diving: African Championship Decides Final Continental Quotas

The final continental quotas were decided at the 2019 African Diving Championships. The highest ranked eligible athlete in the men’s and women’s 3m springboard and the men’s and women’s 10m platform qualified to the Olympics. The African Diving Championships was held in Durban, South Africa from December 16th to December 18th 2019.

In total, three nations competed at the championships; Botswana, Egypt and South Africa. The men’s 3m springboard was won by Egypt’s Mohab Ishak whom obtained a score of 405.35. The event was an Egyptian sweep as Ammar Hassan and Youssef Selim won the silver and bronze medals respectively. The women’s 3m springboard saw South Africa’s Micaela Bouter edge out her compatriot Julia Vincent to win the gold medal with a total of 265.55 points. The bronze medal was won by Egypt’s Maha Amer.

The two quotas in the 10m platform events were won by Egypt as Youssef Selim beat out his compatriot Mohab Ishak in the men’s event while Maha Gouda won over South Africa’s Jaimee Gundry in the women’s event.

The final opportunity for athletes to qualify in diving to the Olympics will be at the 2020 Diving World Cup to be held in April.
