Cycling: Mountain Biking Olympic Rankings Published, 26 Nations Qualify to the Olympics

The final event which awarded points to the Mountain Biking Olympic Rankings ended last weekend. Athletes can earn points for their nations at various events held during the 2019 and 2020 season and at two World Cup events held in 2021. The top 21 nations earned places to the games with the top two earning three athlete quotas and nations ranked third to seventh earning two quotas. The remaining places were given a single athlete quota.

Switzerland was the top ranked nation in both the men’s and women’s rankings thus allowing them to compete with a full team of six athletes. Behind them in the men’s ranking is Italy who will compete with three men and one woman while on the women’s side the United States was second and will compete with three women and one man. France, Germany and the Netherlands qualified two men and two women each.

Brazil and Spain qualified two men and one woman while Canada and Denmark qualified one man and two women. Qualifying one man and one woman are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and South Africa. Nations qualifying only one male athlete were Greece, Norway, New Zealand, Romania and Russia while Argentina, Australia, Estonia, Great Britain and Ukraine qualified one female athlete.

As the Olympic rankings takes priority over the continental and 2019 World Championships, reallocations were made to reflect this new information. This means Namibia is qualified in the men’s and women’s events thanks to the 2019 African Championships while Mexico is qualified in both genders thanks to the 2019 Pan American Championships. The 2019 World Championships senior quotas went to Australia and Israel for the men and Slovenia and Sweden for the women. Additionally, the quotas awarded to the Under 23 athletes at the 2019 World Championships go to Chile and Great Britain for the men and Portugal and Russia for the women.

China still retains its quotas won at the 2019 Asian Championships while host nation Japan will be granted a place to compete in each event. This was the final opportunity for nations to qualify in mountain biking. All that remains is for the nations to confirm their quotas.
