Gutierrez strikes gold in her home nation at the 2019 Pan American Road Cycling Championship. In terms of Olympic qualification, the highest ranked eligible athlete qualified their nation to the Olympics. The Pan American Road Cycling Championship is currently being held in Ixmiquilpan, Mexico from May 1st to May 5th 2019.
Ariadna Gutierrez of Mexico was able to build up a significant lead on the 88.2km race to win gold with a time of 2:40:12, over a minute ahead of Chile’s Denisse Ahumada whom finished second with a time of 2:41:49 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Teniel Campbell whom outsprinted her pack of competitors to take third with a time of 2:43:40.
As a reminder, the Nations World Rankings will have priority over the continental qualifiers. Should Mexico qualify through the rankings then the continental quota will be passed down to the next highest ranked nation that did not qualify through the rankings. The men’s race is expected to be held tomorrow.
Edit: Due to the release of the Olympic Nation Rankings, the quota has been reallocated to Paraguay.
