Kazakhstan had a great performance on the first day of the 2021 Asian Canoe Sprint Olympic Qualifiers where they won quotas in three out of the four boats that were available today. The highest ranked eligible boat in the men’s K2 1000m, women’s K1 500m, men’s C2 1000m and women’s C2 500m qualified a spot to compete at the games. The Asian Canoe Sprint Olympic Qualifiers is currently being held in Pattaya, Thailand from May 5th to May 6th 2021.
The heats for the women’s K1 500m were won by Kazakhstan’s Natalya Sergeyeva (1.53.276) and Iran’s Hediye Kazemi (1:54.412), allowing them and their respective runners-up to advance directly to the finals. The semi-final race was won by Uzbekistan’s Arina Tanatmisheva (1:55.890). The event and quota was won by Sergeyeva whom finished the course in 1:53.711. Silver was won by Singapore’s Stephanie Chen (1:54.649) while bronze went to Japan’s Hideka Tatara (1:54.896).
The men’s K2 1000m followed the same pathway as the women’s K1 500m. The heats were won by China’s Wang Congkang and Bu Tingkai (3:21.660) and Kazakhstan’s Ilya Golendov and Andrey Yerguchyov (3:18.947). The semi-final race was won by South Korea’s Gwon Gi-hong and Jo Hyun-hee (3:36.665). The final was a very close battle between China and Kazakhstan with the former winning by 0.218 seconds with a time of 3:11.344. Bronze was won by Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yong-bo and Lin Yung-chieh (3:15.612).
The canoe events only had a straight final. The men’s C2 1000m was won by Kazakhstan’s Timofey Yemelyanov and Sergey Yemelyanov whom just edged out Japan’s Kaiki Oshiro and Takanori Tome by 0.172 seconds with a time of 3:37.608. Bronze went to Uzbekistan’s Vladlen Denisov and Gerasim Kochnev.
The women’s C2 500m event was won by Kazakhstan’s Svetlana Ussova and Margarita Torlopova whom finished the course in 1:59.250. Silver was won by Indonesia’s Riska Andriyani and Nurmeni (2:00.300) while bronze went to Iran’s Parisa Nargesi and Atena Balgouri (2:02.190).
The final canoe sprint quotas will be decided tomorrow with five more tickets to be handed out.
