Six nations qualified to the Olympics at the 2021 3×3 Olympic Qualification Tournament. 20 teams were placed into four pools of five teams where the top two advanced to the quarter-finals. The top three teams all qualified to compete at the games. The final was not played. The 3×3 Olympic Qualification Tournament was held in Graz, Austria from May 26th to May 30th 2021.
In the women’s tournament, three teams went 4-0 during their pool games. The United States won Pool A, Japan won Pool B while Hungary won Pool C. Joining them to the quarterfinals were France (3-1 record), Australia (3-1) and Belarus (2-2) respectively. Belarus won in a tiebreak between the Netherlands and Estonia thanks to scoring more points. Pool D saw a three-way tie with 3-1 records between Austria, Spain and Switzerland. Spain won the group and Switzerland finished second thanks to more points scored.
In the knock-out stage, The United States and Japan had little trouble winning 21-10 and 20-13 against Belarus and Switzerland respectively. The other quarter-final matches were a lot closer with France narrowly beating Hungary 18-17 while Spain needed overtime to win 14-12 against Australia. The first teams to book their spot to the Olympics were the United States thanks to its 21-13 win over Spain and France who narrowly defeated Japan 15-14. The final quota was decided between Spain and Japan where the later won in overtime 20-18.
On the men’s side, France and Latvia finished 4-0 in Pools C and D respectively. They were joined by Slovenia and the Netherlands respectively whom finished 2-2 and scored more points than the other teams to win the tiebreaker. Pool A had Brazil and Poland finish with 3-1 records, but since Poland defeated Brazil 13-12, the team finished first. Pool B had Belgium, Lithuania and the United States all finish with 3-1 records. Lithuania and the United States scored more points than Belgium, but both scored 80 points each. The United States won the pool due to being a higher seed.
The only seeding upset to occur in the quarterfinals was the Netherlands’ 21-16 victory over the United States. Poland defeated Slovenia 21-16, Latvia won 21-19 over Lithuania while France was victorious 21-19 against Brazil. Poland and the Netherlands booked their spot to the games by defeating Latvia and France 20-18 and 21-13 respectively. The final quota was won by Latvia who won against France 21-15
One more quota remains in the women’s and men’s 3×3 as the sport prepares to make its Olympic debut. This will be decided at the Universality Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held next week. In this tournament, only teams which have not participated in basketball at the last two Olympics are eligible to compete.
