Baseball/Softball: Dominican Republic Completes Baseball Roster with Final Qualifier Victory

The line-up for the men’s baseball tournament has been set after the conclusion of the Baseball Final Qualifier Tournament. Originally, six teams were scheduled to compete, but with the withdrawal of Australia, China and Chinese Taipei only three teams competed. The event was held in Puebla, Mexico from June 22nd to June 26th 2021.

The three teams competed in a round robin group where the winner advanced directly to the final while the other two teams faced off in the semi-finals. The group was won by the Dominican Republic where a five-run seventh inning was the difference maker in the 10-7 win over Venezuela and a run in the bottom of the ninth gave them the 4-3 win over the Netherlands. Venezuela finished second thanks to a 9-3 win over the Netherlands on the second day.

The two nations faced off against each other in the semi-final. A five and four run inning in the third and seventh respectively gave Venezuela a 10-0 mercy rule win. A six-run fourth inning by the Dominican Republic in the final essentially sealed its spot to the Olympics as the nation would go on to win 8-5 against Venezuela.

This will be the nation’s second trip to the Olympics. The Dominican Republic’s previous appearance was when the sport made its first debut back in 1992. They will be looking to have better performance than the sixth place they achieved.
